Come on, admit it. There are things you do in life only because everyone else is doing them. Being different – specially in our society (…ضروري، عيب، مفروض، ما بيسوا!، عادة، لازم) – is not seen as a good thing because it is threatening! Our society prefers those who submit themselves to conventions, who are legalistic, silent, nodding, parochial, and dogmatic. And so, we conform and we try to inhibit our difference and be like everyone else.
Are you with that political party because everyone else in your family is? Did you go to Uni because getting a diploma is a must? What about your job? Did you become a doctor, engineer or lawyer because that was what was expected of you? What about your hobbies ? Are you enough trendy ? What about religion? That’s a tricky one. Are you a Muslim, Christian, Druze or else just because your parents were? Are your beliefs those that your family, a political leader or a cleric inculcated in you? … Are you happy with those decisions?!
I would like to put it to you that sheep-like beliefs and behaviors are dangerous. And here is why conformism is dangerous (الامتثالية خطيرة) for the society and for yourself: because critical thinking goes out the window. Curiosity fades away. The use of Reason is lost. We don’t stop and think about what we are doing because everyone else is doing it. We forget to question whether it is right or wrong and we just follow the other sheep.
Listen to this inspirational speech …
Much religious sectarianism, racism, political hatred, violence and even war would be avoided if people would only think for themselves.
“Humanity’s most valuable assets have been the non-conformists. Were it not for the non-conformists, he who refuses to be satisfied to go along with the continuance of things as they are, and insists upon attempting to find new ways of bettering things, the world would have known little progress, indeed.”
– John Kenneth Galbraith –
